Dear Friends: In 2003 the Amerind Foundation celebrated its 66th anniversary by launching its first ever membership program, and as we start our third membership year we are proud to report that over 500 people have signed up and joined the Amerind family. We invite you to join their ranks by becoming a member of the Amerind extended family! Why a membership program at the Amerind? The answer lies in some new initiatives that need the support of a larger community. In recent years the Amerind has expanded its programs to address a larger audience and serve a more diverse community. Although the Amerind's founders provided the Foundation with an endowment that supports the basic functioning of the Amerind Museum and the Fulton-Hayden Memorial Library, we need additional support to grow and meet the needs of this expanding audience. Here are some of the goals we are currently pursuing at the Amerind: v Redesigning and installing new exhibitions in the Amerind Museum and planning for new outdoor exhibits (in the last two years we have installed eight new exhibitions in the Amerind Museum!) v Designing ethnobotany and natural history trails, to take advantage of Amerind's spectacular natural setting (we are currently raising funds for a new educational landscaping plan for the Amerind museum and art gallery) v Developing a comprehensive education program that reaches out to local school children and other underserved groups and communities (in the last two years nearly 1400 school students from southern Arizona have experienced Amerind’s “hands-on” education program) v Scheduling Native Arts Weekends where Indian artists come to the museum to demonstrate their skills, sell their crafts, and interpret their cultural traditions (in two years the Amerind has sponsored six Native Arts weekends and eight Native Arts workshops for our members) v Developing a resident artist program, where Indian painters, sculptors, writers, and musicians come to the Amerind to study our incomparable collections and engage in creative collaborations with our staff, visiting scholars, and museum visitors v Sponsoring an annual public lecture series on a variety of anthropological, archaeological and historical subjects (in 2005 we are launching a monthly “brown-bag” lecture series in the Amerind Library) A dynamic membership program is essential to the success of these new initiatives. Membership programs enlarge the circle of institutional friends, some of whom will eventually provide major gifts to the Foundation, but annual dues help to sustain our mission as well. To develop the kinds of quality programs outlined above, we need your support. Those who have visited the Amerind Foundation over the years know that it is a special place where special things happen. Please consider becoming a member of the Amerind extended family. The many benefits of Amerind membership are outlined in the enclosed membership application form. If you have any questions about the Amerind and its programs, I hope you will give us a call or drop by. Thank you! John A. Ware Michael W. Hard Executive Director President, Board of Directors
